Now, I may just be a simple caveman (thanks for the memories Phil Hartman), but seems to me you cannot rule him out as the perp if you don’t actually know where he is.

Either way, all sorts of information is dribbling out. For example, as Ha’aretz’s reports in the article to which you link, we already know how long the perpetrator was in Bulgaria. I am confident that some pretty bright and determined people are following the trail (and are likely already much further along the trail than the media or we know or than they will admit), and we will know in the not too distant future — but unfortunately not soon enought — whether our former guest at Gitmo did it.
