You can’t both be a wingnut, and understand the world around you. Most of these folks suffer from deep religious delusions, and will never function like an educated person. They’ll just parrot wingnut talking points to maintain their position in an extremely backwards subculture.

And yet, I find people who adhere to various wingnut positions who are educated people, by all usual standards. Broun, the ‘evolution and embryology are from the pit of hell’ guy is a doctor. So is Ron Paul. I meet people who have advanced degrees who make excuses for this madness all the time. There are highly educated people who accept the anti-vaccination crap, from all political positions. (I also meet people who are completely ignorant about science, but happy to accept that scientists are on to something. Some days, I are one.)
