We did ban Chinese from becoming citizens after they helped build the railroads. So we were being hypocrites a litter earlier than 1910.
It was the “yellow peril” back then, first applied to the Chinese laborers, then to the Japanese. The reasons, aside from racism, were:
the fear that the mass immigration of Asians threatened white wages and standards of living, and the fear that they would eventually take over and destroy western civilization, replacing it with their ways of life and values.
In other words, the same fears and bigotry as we see now regarding Central American immigrants. Asians are now (barely) OK.
