I found this movie on Netflix last night and thought it very much spoke to the condition of poor women who have survived through the years as best they can. That this woman got away with it for 30 yrs without being discovered was amazing, but heartbreaking since her entire person was hidden in another persona created purely to survive and which she was willing to use to get a bit of what she thought was happiness. It was truly heartbreaking, although another character brought some light into an otherwise rather dark film.

I thought the film spoke rather brilliantly to the condition of women not just in 19th century Ireland, but in any era. It was a period piece, but with none of the Hollywood-ish overlay of today’s cultural memes, which would have spoiled it. Both Glenn Close and Janet McTeer were wonderful as Albert Nobbs and Hubert Page.
