It’s not for everyone. Even within my family, it causes some divisiveness. It was part of the reason for one of my cousins’ divorces (that family had a lot of problems, but she flat-out refused to make ‘that disgusting pie’ for him, one of his favorites).

It’s not “disgusting.” As I recall we ate it. It was just OK, not something that you would want to bake when other pies are much tastier.

CMIIW but I think this recipe originated during the Depression when people couldn’t afford fresh ingredients and had to use what was available.
