I am not a pilot but this seems not the most efficient method.

I could go with two explanations.

1. He knew he didn’t have enough room or altitude to land safely, so he used the tree as a “brake” for a short-field “landing.” (aka crash)
2. He is incompetent, came in too low, and clipped the tree by mistake, and was damn lucky he didn’t wreck himself or anything but the plane badly.

It’s been a while since I had any flight training, but IIRC an emergency landing using the wings to catch trees is an acceptable way to attempt a survivable crash.
