Interesting you mention that. When the gun wielding black panthers were toting guns in the sixties, all sorts of white Americans had no problem restricting their second amendment rights. Those same types now think it is great to tote guns and cite the second amendment when it comes to Obama.

All the debate in the world will not take away that the root of all of this is that a certain large percentage of white America is afraid - no scared green that their perception of America defined as a white Christian place is being challenged.

Of course it is.

We really are on the whole much more racially tolerant. We really are on the whole much more secular than the religious right would like. These are not bad things.

What is a bad thing is that there is a lot of fear about this and that the GOP is fanning that fear without a thought to consequence.
