OMG, Muslims praying?? How horrible! And you’re linking to Mark Steyn?

Fuck this. I’m outta here before I lose my temper. DF, you make me almost sorry that I defended your ass in the pages a while back when you weren’t here to do it yourself.

I don’t have a problem with anyone praying. I think the point made here was that the conservatism we see today in religion, and I don’t mean only Islam, is stronger and less tolerant than it was less than a generation ago.

A better argument would be why that is so, Christian or Muslim.

I left the Middle East nearly twenty years ago now, but when I first went there in the 70’s tolerance to non Muslims was very high (and I might add to homosexuals). By the 90’s all that had changed. The fundamentalists wanted one change after another, and got them.

I think it is a cultural crisis that has only one fallback defense through religion to try to preserve what is seen as the good old days, just like Christian fundamentalists seem to yearn for.
