Social conservatives learned a long time ago that rolling back rights, once established is a lot harder than preventing their recognition. It’s why they tend to lose on the “big” abortion question (should it be legal), why they lost on gay marriage (and a hundred other marriage issues, like no fault divorce), and on more mundane things, like access to contraception.
About the only time we have been able to roll back a pre-existing right, if you will, was prohibition. And that turned out… poorly.
The gun issue is going to be very difficult because it’s not so much an issue of the right to self-defense for a lot of people, it’s the right to have this one particular thing, consequences be damned.
