When I was in the Navy, we had the same issues with Soviet ships. (When I was aboard America CV-66, we had a Soviet trawler intelligence ship cut across our bow and attempt to divert an aircraft carrier.

At the height of the Cold War, around the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the local TV news in Colorado Springs included a “NORAD report” along with the weather. They would give a synopsis of Soviet activity near the US, especially including the positions of the AGI trawlers. When my dad was at Shemya in the Aleutians, a TU-16 Badger crashed into the water just outside the territorial limit. They sent out a rescue boat and recovered a crewman’s body along with assorted debris and documents. A Soviet plane landed a couple of days later to pick up the body, which was transferred with full honors. A mysterious ship operated around the crash area for quite a while but the base staff heard no more about it.
