I’m not saying it was morally justified, but I (and millions of others) saw it as a betrayal of his purist, minimalist, acoustic beginnings.

The blues is not a museum… Louis Armstrong grew beyond playing Dixieland back in the 1910s, The Beatles outgrew skiffle, George Clinton moved beyond straight soul singing, etc. All his folkie stuff is still available, so it isn’t like he’s depriving us of anything…
