True. but I would like to know more.

Of your own ancestry?

Most of it can be researched with modern tools in a way never before possible.

Record keeping outside of royalty, or in the Christian world the local parish books, is scant. In the US things are pretty good back to the 1790 census. Colonial times are ok, especially if your ancestors are from New England.

Northern Europeans kept pretty good records from the Protestant revolution times. Before that things get real iffy outside of royalty or landed gentry, unless again your ancestor was connected to the Church.

In the East some regions of China kept records of some note, and some families in Japan can go back a 1000 years. Korea possibly too but it has been invaded so many times I don’t know what could have survived.

If you have ancestors in the rich families of Italian states you could probably find something.

Native Americans, most of Africa, and SE Asia - probably little survives. India I don’t know about, but there are royal lines and some old genealogies there.

A genetics test might help.
