Not entirely accurate. The number has fluctuated over the years and doesn’t correlate with the number of officers. Same with the number of officers shot.

It’s down tremendously from 1970 to be sure, but the rate has fluctuated over the past 20 years.

And by the way, the NYPD is about the same size now as it was in 1992. And it’s down from 37,000 in 2002.
