In 2001 and 2006, they set fires on federal land (arson). They were convicted and sentenced to only 1 year in prison. There’s a mandatory minimum of 5 years. The prosecution appealed and got the sentence reversed at the 9th Circuit. The Supreme Court refused to hear the case. The Hammonds were sentenced to a full five years, minus the time already served. They are supposed to fly to California on Monday and turn themselves in.
