Jane Sanders took on $10 million in debt to buy the 32 acre lakefront site in 2011. That is a crushing load indeed for an institution with fewer than 300 students.
A classic example of trying to grow too fast causing bankruptcy. The plan was to quadruple the size of the institution. Now, while that may have been a good idea over the long term, I’ve yet to see where the college didn’t have space for gradual growth before building a whole new campus.
I’d guess this is a case where an “amazing opportunity” came up and there was a lack of thought about whether the plans were realistic or not.
