It has been my take for some time now that we, the US, are in a religious civil war.

In the old days, these wars would have gotten a lot more physical by now. Today we’re a bit more sophisticated, but the warfare continues.

In some respects the two sides in the US Civil War were closer together than the partisan chasm we have now.

Abolitionists and slave holders inhabited the same reality and disagreed on whether or not slavery should be part of that reality.

Now US liberals and conservatives inhabit completely different realities.
