The most racist moment I witnessed in Germany came in Colditz. Chemnitz isn’t too far from there IIRC. My understanding is the same as yours that the AfD and far right are most popular in the former DDR.

West Germans have been living with immigrants since the 60’s. Although they are often not the ideal model of integration and tolerance, they have a much different history than former East Germany, which only knew Korean or Vietnamese guest workers or third-world students from friendly nations.
