re: #38 ckkatz
Fascinating story, thanks for sharing it! And good for you for intervening and quite possibly saving the lady’s life.
I am sorry to hear about your neighbors’ uninvolved behavior.
Reminds me of the Kitty Genovese story. Although I understand that there are now arguments that reports about the neighbors were badly mis-stated.
I have been fortunate to not have had to shoot anyone. Or even had to seriously consider it. I have been in fist fights. But mostly in Pittsburgh back in the days when there were generally understood rules about the limits.
Edit - Cut and paste missed the first line, had to add it.
I was 8 when the story about Kitty Genovese hit the news in NYC. It made a big impression on me, how an entire neighborhood could ignore that kind of thing. Just now, I wondered if 9-1-1 was in service at the time. I guessed it was not, and I was correct. Kitty was killed in ‘64. 9-1-1 wasn’t rolled out until four years later, in Indiana. Would it have made a difference if 9-1-1 was available in Queens at the time?
