Yeah, well: I recall that Hillary Clinton - and Democrats in general - DID address these peoples’ “economic anxieties” during the campaign: the really economic ones, that is: not their racism, nativism and/or cultural bigotries. The problem was that she told them something like reality: that their industry was dying, that domestic and global market forces were making coal obsolete, and that their main economic hope for the future was a massive redirection and retraining effort to move into other, non-coal sectors.
Trump and the GOP, OTOH, kept their message simple: your economic problems are your social “enemies” fault (dirty-hippie, sneery-librul, fake-science elitists who hate you and your religion): and that he would bring back their economic glory-days with a few strokes of the pen.

The bedrock problem of the American System: Democrats appeal to peoples’ interests: Republicans appeal to peoples’ hates.
Who is likelier to come out ahead???
