The role of German academia/intelligentsia in the society of that day is worth exploring.
I think there are important lessons to be learned from the 20th century, for scientists and others involved in the business of science, as well as education.
My gut response against the big STEM push of the past few years has been that it seemed all too utilitarian. STEM folk serving at the behest of the all-conquering need to expand the economy, etc.
I’m much more inclined to want science to be lumped in with art, not engineering. The human creativity drive is very idiosyncratic and should not be turned into a mechanistic process.
