Many of us never had traditional pensions; we rely on 401(k)s and IRAs to fund our retirement, which means stock market. Others whose pensions were frozen years ago also rely on the stock market. And companies that support pensions (either frozen or continuing) have their money invested in the stock market. So a large number of real people can suffer too from a collapse.

The same money that would be used for hedge fund bailouts would go a lot farther if it were used to individually compensate small investors for losses in legitimate retirement accounts. This would be capped at a reasonable amount and could be combined with a proper pension plan in the future.
