Stealing a vanity plate would be a very clever thing to do, if you were planning murder. It would distract people nicely.

That is conceivable of course, but at the same time it is obviously the primary solid lead and a statement on whether or not the owner was on vacation, or was a white male, 6’1” and 200 lbs, or both, would seem to be something that could have been commented on by the police by now. Perhaps they have and Google news is slow..
