I’m shocked. Shocked, that the percentages of people moving out of NY has remained relatively stable since the mid 1970s, when there was a sharp uptick (likely timed with the NYC and NYS fiscal crisis). That’s despite the claims that NY has become a tax burden to everyone and people are moving away in droves that are repeated ad nauseum.

Turns out that the uptick are to places that are a lot warmer, like Florida or Arizona and California, but every state has seen outflows increase over the years as we’ve become more mobile as a society. Even Texas has seen an uptick, as 91% of people stayed in the state in 1900 but it’s down to 82% in the most recent year. NY went from 79% to 61%, so there’s much more movement away. Florida went from 90% to 74%. Louisiana went from 90% to 71%. Oklahoma went from 85% to 65%.

Bucking the move away trend? Nevada. Nevada has seen an increase from 52 to 65%.

Everyone is fleeing New York City, as evidenced by the skyrocketing costs of residential real estate and severe housing shortage there./
