I understand that standards change and I guess part of the reason why I am a bit idealistic about this is my age but I do think being upfront helps, also acknowledging why it’s offensive, and how you plan to or have learned from it.

Herring, while I’m still not too damn happy about this, has at least been forthright, which is more than I can say about Northam. Context matters, too, even with these instances: Herring did his blackface to dress as one of the famous rappers of the time (of which, white folks were definitely not among them in 1980) for a party, while Northam stood in blackface next to someone in fucking Klan garb. Northam’s incident (and his public reaction when it came out last week) is much, much worse when comparing the two.
