Their leadership and whoever handles their PR was totally unprepared for the blowback that occured. Cluelessness combined with no preparation regarding a communications plan* for this decision. So they’re reacting a full cycle behind, scrambling, and thus making themselves look worse.

And with their previous bullying (or possibly success) there are plenty of folk willing to help take Komen down a notch in the public’s eye.

* - Another thing from volunteer board training is that there is are certain things to do when the reporter appears with a microphone after your organization has drawn their attention. It generally involves there already being a person appointed to deal with this who has had training in doing so. If you are not that person your job is “No comment” along with referring them to contact that spokesperson.

That’s the worst part. They basically went into a 24 hour communication blackout and they *still* couldn’t come up with a half-coherent response.
