I see. I remember my grandfather, Korean War veteran who experienced some pretty cold winters as a kid in Johnstown, Pennsylvania telling me that Korea was one of the coldest places he had ever gone to. I think when we talk about the Korean War, we never factor in the climate. I think a lot of Americans don’t realize how close to Siberia the Koreas are.

I think one reason my parents didn’t think northern New York was that bad was that my mother was from near Buffalo and my father from a little coal town not that far from Johnstown. So they’d seen their share of cold weather before, and probably in homes that were heated less efficiently than ours.

And per nastiness of Korea there is the climate. And also the odds are that the accommodations they had were probably with limited heating, damp, and drafty. All of which make things more miserable.
