I think we’re in a different world from the 1980s and before, where you could envision one party taking >40 states. Just by virtue of being the GOP candidate, Trump would have a hard floor at 45%.

However, it is starting to feel like a hard ceiling, too.

There are those who have allowed their pocketbooks to override their racism. That’s how we ended up with the majorities we had in 2008.
