Shut it down, let it sit for a couple of hours, started it up, and now it seems to be OK. (Watch, as soon as I post this the displays will go black again.)

This sounds very much like heat issues. If you have a separate video card make sure the fans are working and clean. If it’s onboard graphics… that’s more difficult.
