But still most people here have at least one car, and it’s not reasonable to think that US private car ownership is all going to go away because a bunch of US cities have decent public transport again. We have to work on both public transport and lower-impact private transport.

80% of Americans live in urban areas. Better public transport within cities, and between cities, would be a good enough reason to persuade 1/2 of American car owners to junk their cars instead of replacing them when the vehicles reach the end of their useful life, and use the occasional rental instead of owning.

Bad news maybe for GM and Ford, but they can start manufacturing buses and streetcars instead. From 1943 to 1945, there were 0 consumer cars manufactured. There’s no such thing as a ‘44 Chevy or a ‘45 Cadillac. And y’know, the companies did just fine.
