I really doubt the law works like that. I don’t think security guards actually have any real authority to hold people, or are shielded from lawsuits. Can you cite anything to support this?

Not sure about Alaska but in Indiana you can be arrested by a private citizen
(Indiana Code 35-33-1-4). I think he might be slightly confused though since the citizen is still liable for false arrest/detention while the officer who takes custody is immune.
