You probably wouldn’t use in a neutral, say, statistical report “soda” for some areas and “coke” for others, as separate categories, meaning the same substance. You would use one, or another, or a third, more formal term.

Whereas typhoon, cyclone and hurricane will all be used in the same report, the only diff. being where the event happens. You being or not being from that region would play no role. So it’s exactly this non-regional use of “regionalized” terms that got me interested.

But I just remembered another thing that can serve as a true analogy: astronauts, cosmonauts and taikonauts. Same thing, traditionally different terms.

Also, though, we were talking about language. I used it as an opening to insert my question. Seemed as good as anything else.

I would still like to find out why we don’t call it Deutschland? Where did Germany come from? Yes, I could probably look it up. But if we have an expert here, it’s so much easier.
