Apparently, del Toro has been trying for many, many years to make a film of H.P. Lovecraft’s novella “At The Mountains of Madness”; if I understand correctly, he has a complete screenplay - it’s ready to go, basically. But the studios are concerned there’s no love story, or leading lady, etc., etc. Sounds he’s come up with a script that’s meticulously faithful to the source material.

It’d make a great film. I’d recommend, if I could talk to him, that he try going international to get the money for the production. Sadly, such a project would be deemed “too risky” by the Hollywood studio accountants.

It’s absolutely mind-boggling, the guy who to this day still gets rave reviews for Pan’s Labyrinth can’t get a studio to touch a Lovecraft film because it’s “risky.”
