There was an analogous situation in Germany in the 1920s. Nazi theoreticians recognized and exploited the virulent anti-semitism of the working and lower middle classes at a time when the press and intellectuals liked to pretend it either didn’t exist or wasn’t serious if it did.

Most notoriously, Julius Streicher and Der Stürmer - a rag so vile and obscene that even high-ranking Nazis like Göring complained about it. Nonetheless, Hitler was a big fan and read it every week.
