As initially proposed, the financial reform bill was strong.

As initially proposed, the public option was a great idea.

Congress is where great ideas go to die. The ideas start out strong, then cynicism and mistrust allows them to leave the job unfinished, or watered down.

There are plenty of good people in congress, trying hard to get things done. What is needed is people who pay attention and reward the good actors, not this kind of nihilistic tripe.
