If the GOP leadership can’t present a plausible show of investigation, then 2018 becomes a do-or-die situation for the sleeping electorate. They won’t risk that.

Sure they will. They’re going to bet as they always do, on low turnout that favors their base. They’ll get out there on the stump, talking about how Mueller’s investigation was a “witch hunt,” a partisan affair chock full of Clinton supporters who were trying to overturn the results of the 2016 election.

The “moderates” will wring their hands and say that while they don’t approve of Mueller’s termination, it is within the powers of the presidency. That while they are “dismayed” and “concerned” about that whole affair, they have faith in the Congressional committee investigations and will support them as they meander along.
