These people.

re: #338 Eclectic Cyborg

So they’d be cool with me opening a cafe and putting up a Nation of Islam flag…right?

Hey it’s part of Americana. //

The Coon Chicken Restaurant sign is a genuine historical artifact and it does need to be displayed but not in this context:

It would be a powerful addition to a display on racism, for example, since it shows how casual and ubiquitous that racism was in the past.

Surrounded by basically pleasant and positive nostalgia pieces, it is jarring to say the least. The owners are either completely tone deaf, or they do in fact consider blatant racism an object of nostalgia.

The problem with jumping on the restaurant for displaying what is a true piece of Americana jumps to the argument that many people responded to about the confederate statues. Put them up somewhere that is not public land. This is private property and they are displaying what is real history; unlike a confederate statue that was placed to advance racism.

As SK notes, putting in context in their restaurant with other racist signs would add historical relevance over just having it displayed. They may or may not (most probably not) be tonedeaf. Their business will suffer if enough people get annoyed, but that is their lot. 1A is what it is. Maybe they will take the complaints to heart and do something more appropriate with their historical objects. But, it’s Lubbox, so probably not.
