Not all of them, or even most of them would flounce. Many SoCons would seethe but still understand that Romney is better from their perspective than Obama. Thus they’d stay in the fold. The ones that wouldn’t? The Republican party is better off without them.

Well according to this article, only about 18% of Republicans said they would never consider voting for Romney and that may have more to do with RomneyCare and his image as a flip-flopper than his being a Mormon. What I do thing he needs to be preparing for is the anti-Mormon Evangelical groups engaging in a campaign to make his faith seem weird or unacceptable with the general public. Part of the reason President Obama went ahead and released his long-form birth certificate was out of concern that birtherism would become mainstream with independents. I don’t think he was wrong about the possibility. Unfortunately, blatant expressions of bigotry have somehow become mainstream again so Romney better have a plan to combat it.
