I think one factor is the constant drumbeat from the likes of Geller that Obama is in fact a Muslim intent on imposing foreign values.

GW, despite his faults, was a bulwark against letting this crew get any leverage nationally. These people were always there. Once he and Rove stepped off the stage, and Obama was elected, teh crazee found its voice and the gloves came off.
