I remember in the 2000 election, a very homophobic friend insisting to me that women would favor Bush over Gore because Bush was more “attractive.” I wouldn’t call GWB ugly but I do think Gore probably was the more handsome of the two men running. I think Truman had a nice quote though. He was saying that Franklin Pierce was probably our best looking president but as President, he was bad as Coolidge and Buchanan. Meanwhile Lincoln, a man who Southern papers and even his own General McClellan likened to an ape was probably our best.

In terms of things I have considered when voting for president, looks has never appeared on the list.
