What brands are good?

Growing up in a liberal household has left me woefully ignorant about guns.

I only know the basics:

1) Don’t point the gun at anything you don’t want dead.
2) Assume the gun is ready to fire at all times.

3) Keep your finger off the trigger until the sights are on your target.
4) Know your target and what is beyond it.

For a shotgun, you can’t go wrong with Mossberg 500 or Remington 870 series.

For a handgun, there are MANY good makes, but its hard to go wrong with any .357 revolver that says “Smith and Wesson” on its side. With semi-automatics, there are many good makes, but its also hard to go wrong with any pistol made by Sigarms, Beretta, CZ, and a few others so long as the model in question fits your hand. You have a lot more latitude with semi-automatic guns to pick different sorts of models, depending on personal preferences.
