I’ve kind of explored the idea that the Soviets had kompromat on both J. Edgar Hoover and Joe McCarthy. These two led anti-communist witch hunts and accused dozens of innocent or only peripherally involved people, yet missed the Kremlin’s multi-million dollar subsidies to the CPUSA and the presence of at least 2 Soviet moles, real spies, in the State Department. Dozens of State employees lost their jobs and their careers for nothing but the two spies were never even suspected. They also accused the wrong agent, Julius Rosenberg, in the transfer of vital atomic bomb secrets despite the Venona intercepts proving his guilt in other matters.
