A little yeah. The thing is even though these Democrats were very conservative, they’d never become Republicans because for too many of them, they’d never join the party of the hated Lincoln. As more people with memories of Lincoln or second hand ones faded off, I think that’s what made it more acceptable for Southern whites to become Republicans. And I think Strom Thurmond switching over was a big deal.
