What are the relative merits of each? Asking as someone who has never shot anything except a .22 at my Granddad’s farm and in Boy Scouts.

357 are a bigger and more powerful round, but because of that are more expensive to use in target shooting by a lot, and are mostly made as revolvers rather than semi-auto. (Many also take 38 special round, which have the same limitations and benefits, but less so.)

9mm are smaller and probably the most common round after the .22, which makes them cheaper to train with (by about half, last I checked). They are also more commonly made as semi-autos, if you like that sort of thing.
