I don’t know. I was very moved by this speech. Yes, his affect was flat. Maybe I’m giving him too much credit but it seemed to me he was keeping the flourishes down out of respect and perhaps even to control his own emotion. He was out of his element, for sure.

I agree. I think any statements I’d be capable of delivering after touring Buchenwald would sound pretty “flat”, too. The somber, emotional weight of the place must be incredible.
