Because when the comments scroll automatically it’s too easy to ding the wrong post, or miss, etc. You can click the comment number to show the comment in its own window and ding from there.

I figured it was probably something like that, but I thought I’d ask anyway. I guess I’ll stick to regular mode as opening the comment in another window kinda defeats the convenience of having everything in one place.
