Should have also noted the holding off was temporary. Chechnya was eventually crushed - by artillery, as D_F notes.

The temporary holding-off was, of course, after a complete collapse of Soviet control and the formation of a provisional Chechen government and presumably the seizure of considerable ex-Soviet war materiel.

I’m not even sure what sort of point D_F is attempting to make here.
