The great error was the belief we had to stop communism everywhere, no matter the cost, or we’d lose all of Asia. The most LBJ should’ve done was help the South Vietnamese fight for themselves. Going back earlier, we should’ve told the French to get the hell out of Vietnam and worked with Ho Chi Minh.
And the greatest irony of all is that we did work with Ho Chi Minh during WWII. I have little doubt he would’ve preferred the USA as an ally, not a foe.
