The state of Israel makes the de facto argument that the dominant characteristic of ‘Jews’ is religion (judaism), not ethnicity. I base that on the immigration laws that give highest priority to practitioners, even recent converts, over ethnic jews who practice other religions (and in turn are of higher priority than those neither ethnically nor religiously Jews.)

While freedom of religion is granted within Israel, the religion of Judaism permeates and dominates the nation - not merely de facto as per the US, but de jure (by various laws and regulations).

I’m sorry, but the dominant issue of “it ends up being a state that destroys the capacity of Israel to be a Jewish state” is religion.
