Wouldn’t shock me at all. I remember Derbyshire wishing that 12 Years a Slave, you know the film based off an actual slave’s memoir had portrayed slavery more like Gone With the Wind, the novel written by a white woman born after the war ended and a novel considered Lost Cause lit.

Though that was after National Review fired Derbyshire’s racist ass. His former colleague Jonah Goldberg had the right of it when he wrote regarding Gone With the Wind:

Racist, a word that is tossed around too much these days but that may used freely to describe a book in which a character is described as having experienced something that ‘was almost too much for her little black mind’. Mitchell seems to have viewed blacks as a species of dog: Stupid but loyal.

But John Derbyshire never cared about such realities, and was ultimately fired when he decided to let the world see his unalloyed racist conviction that black people are inferior. Fuck him.
