I am beginning to have the same questions about the GOP clinging to Kavanaugh as I did with the 2nd Amendment folks going all in for Zimmerman…namely, this is the guy you want to hitch your wagon to?

I mean, I get that Trump really wants Kavanaugh because first and foremost, he’d probably save Trump’s ass relative to the Mueller investigation. Overturning Roe, Griswold, Obergfell, etc., would just be ancillary benefits. But I’d think Heritage and the Federalist Society could come up with another 20 candidates with the necessary political hackiness, but without the perjury/rape in the background. He’s just not worth it.

Well no one accused them of being particularly smart. There’s a cynical part of me that suspects they knew this all along and made Kavanaugh a sacrificial lamb so they could get a more so-con extremist like Bartlett who doesn’t have that kind of baggage, just weird religious views that they feel they can cast aside criticism of easily. I don’t know. I suspect any Republican presidential candidate from two years ago would have had Kavanaugh on their list.
